This course provides in-depth integration of pain science, innovative pain self­ management techniques, yoga philosophy, and yoga practices. Participants will gain a solid foundation in pain science and in yoga related to pain and pain management. Daily yoga practices and pain self-management skills acquisition will ready teachers and practitioners to begin integration of Pain Care Yoga into their clinical practices and yoga classes, leading to improved benefits and outcomes. Participants will be able to describe basic pain neurophysiology as well as eight key neuroplastic changes related to chronic pain, demonstrate instructing a client in the guidelines for how to move in the face of pain, including the five key questions that increase success of recovery of function, list four benefits of breathing and body awareness techniques, and nine benefits of practicing yoga postures, specifically related to the lived experience of pain.

For: for health professionals, yoga therapists and yoga teachers, ranging from individual workshops through a professional mentoring program.

More Details on the Pain Care Yoga Certification Course

  • Overview

    The Pain Care Course at Devanadi is a multi-tiered approach to Pain Care wellness education. The program is divided into three levels for in-person and home study.

    Students need to do all three parts for teaching certificate:
    Part I – Pain Care Yoga: (3days, 24 hours) 8-5
    Part II -Overcome Pain Gentle Yoga: (3 days, 18 hours 9-4)
    Part III – Case Study: on own – but tuition covers the cost of review by Neil Pearson

    Attendees will learn:
    • Pain anatomy, biology, physiology, and psychology
    • How suffering impacts every aspect of our existence
    • How we can use the body, the mind, and the environment to increase evidence of safety
    • How to use “moving with ease” as both a pain education tool and analgesic
    • Yoga Therapy skills and techniques for people living with chronic pain.

    List of subject matter:
    • Pain science and educating people in pain about pain
    • Panchamayakosha and biopsychosocial models of pain
    • Pain and the body (tension, inhibition, awareness, image)
    • Pain and the breath Pain and thinking Pain and emotions Pain, the doshas
    • Specific yoga techniques for pain management Breathing awareness
    • Body awareness, breath control, releasing tension
    • Re-engaging the body
    • Awareness of thoughts and emotions
    • Smoothing out thoughts and emotions
    • One-on-one and group practices for people in pain
    • Integration with western pain practitioners, interventions and teams

    All regulated health professionals are welcome, as well as certified yoga teachers and yoga therapists. This course content is not intended for use by participants outside the scope of their license or regulation. CEUs are pending for physical therapists and yoga therapists.

    In this three part course, attendees in the full training (Parts I & II) will be ask a Person in Pain to attend the Part II workshop with them and then continue to work with this person as their case study for Part III. There is no additional charge for the attendee to bring their case study for Part II, however additional people in pain are welcome to attend Part II at the discounted cost of $250.

    Attendees will be directly mentored by Lisa & Julie with their case study in yoga for chronic pain during Part II as well as learn bio-psycho-social and mindful yoga skills that can be implemented into your professional practice and teaching immediately.

    Part III, Home Study, “Mini Mentorship”; Attendees will be mentored by Neil Pearson who will give written feedback on the case study and paper review.

    A PCU Teaching Certificate is awarded to those who complete all three parts of the course and prove competency in the internship case study and review. Certificate Holders are eligible for PCU Level One Affiliate Status.

  • Part I: Pain Care Yoga

    Date: October 11-13, 2019

    Time: 8:00am-5:00pm

    Location: Devanadi Yoga

    Intended Participants: This is a workshop for Yoga Therapists, Health Practitioners and Regulated Health Professionals, yoga teachers and movement professions who wish to focus on pain management or desire more evidence informed knowledge on pain and the lived experience of pain. No yoga experience is necessary.

    Overview:
    The focus is on enhancing foundational knowledge, and shifting paradigms of pain, people living in pain and evidence-based pain care. This course provides in-depth integration of pain science, innovative pain self- management techniques, yoga philosophy and yoga practices. Participants will gain a solid foundation in pain science, and in yoga philosophy related to pain and pain management.
    Daily yoga practices will help the practitioner begin the integration of Pain Care Yoga principles into their clinical or therapeutic practice.

    The course prepares you to work with clients with persistent pain by focusing on the following concepts:
    • Pain anatomy, biology, physiology, psychology
    • How suffering impacts every aspect of our existence
    • How we can use the body, the mind, and the environment to increase evidence of safety
    • How to use ‘moving with ease’ as both a pain education tool and analgesic

    On Your Own
    You will complete written assignments and begin working with a student who will be your case study for Part II.

  • Part II: Overcome Pain Gentle Yoga

    Date: November 15-17, 2019

    Time: 9:00am-4:00pm

    Location: Devanadi Yoga

    Intended Participants: This is a workshop for people living with chronic conditions, practitioners, and students enrolled in the PCU Certification Course.

    For PCU Certification students:
    You and your case study student will attend this 3 day training. Practitioners will gain experiential learning of the techniques of pain care, mindfulness and yoga, build a personal self-care practice, and participate in group mentorship, as they listen to the experiences of people with persistent pain as they learn, practice and discuss pain care techniques.

    The focus for PCU Certification students includes:

    • Experiential learning of techniques—of pain care, mindfulness, and yoga
    • Build a personal self care practice
    • Group mentorship—spend time listening to the experiences of people with persistent pain as they learn, practice and discuss pain care techniques.
    • “Hands on” Case Study mentoring

    For people living in pain:
    Immerse yourself in three days of safe effective practices to decrease your pain and help you live well again. Explore modern science-based views on chronic pain, while empowering yourself with practical tools to improve ease of movement. Heal yourself through yoga techniques designed to wind down your nervous system and promote positive, lasting changes in your body. No yoga experience needed.

  • Part III: Mini-Mentorship

    Home Study (8 hour credit for write up and feedback correction)

    Case Study Report, Pain Science Paper Review
    Mentored by Neil Pearson, practitioners will continue to work with the case study and turn in an intake form, treatment plan, and self-evaluation for review. Complete with competency, a written review on an assigned pain science paper. Once student completes part three, a “Pain Care Yoga Teaching Certificate” is awarded.
